The film exposes the problem of land grabbing in Africa through the stories of two communities — in Ivory Coast and Ghana, respectively — whose lands, cultivated by local farmers under customary land tenure, were taken over by the Belgian company SIAT, producing palm oil and rubber. Established by the ex-World Bank consultant and being the supplier of such giants as Michelin, Unilever, Nestle. The cases exemplify large-scale land deals in West Africa covering a combined five million hectares or 50,000 square kilometres — an area the size of Slovakia. Nation states act as intermediaries, ceding lands to Siat under long-term lease contracts.
The land transfers happened amid land grabbing and violations of local law, human and labour rights. They led to ecological degradation, loss of food sovereignty and acts of violence. Local protests and legal claims against the land grabbing resulted in mass arrests, rights violations and even killings. Which didn't prevent the Belgian company from receiving a sustainability certificate RSPO.
The film answers the question of what are the root causes of land-grabbing in developing countries and whether there are alternatives to mass, industrial plantations that threaten local communities and the environment.
